It is also intended for those with an interest in its history or those who have ancestors in the locality. Radipole Lane from its junction with Causeway to its junction with Spa Road, will be closed to traffic from Monday 10th March 2008, for 4 weeks, in order that safety improvements may be carried out. Latest additions to the site: Save Our Southill Community Area - a brief history of the land, its use by Southill and Radipole residents, and the current threat to its future. Updated Feb 2008 Pictures of Causeway, RadipolePictures of Radipole Lane, Radipole Pictures of Spa Road area, Radipole Pictures of Dorchester Road and Greenhill If you have anything that you think should be on this website, such as forthcoming events, information about local clubs and societies, or you have an interest in the local history, please contact: Radipole is steeped in history going back further than that of the ports of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis and can boast probably the oldest building in the area, St. Ann's church. Southill formed part of the ancient parish of Radipole, but that wasn't the full extent of the old parish. It included part of the Dorchester Road from Redlands down to Greenhill where it met the parish boundary with Preston. When the church of St. John's at the end of the esplanade was opened in 1854, it was hailed as the 'New' Radipole church, only later becoming that belonging to Melcombe Regis. The Borough of Weymouth and Melcombe Regis extended its boundaries in 1895 to include that part of Dorchester Road up to Lodmoor Hill. In 1933 the Borough boundaries changed again, taking in the entire parish of Radipole. |
